General Patient Safety Tips

Ask questions if you have doubts or concerns at a doctor appointment. Take a relative or friend with you to help you ask questions or to take notes for you.

Keep and bring a list of all the medications that you take when you see your doctor. Include even non-prescription medicines like aspirin, vitamins, or mineral supplements.

Make sure you understand what will happen if you need to have surgery. Make sure that you, your doctor, and your surgeon agree on what will be done. Find out how long the surgery will take, what happens afterward, and how you will feel during recovery. Be sure to tell the doctors, nurses, and anesthesiologist about any allergies you may have, and any medications you are taking, including aspirin.

Patient Consumer Information Organizations

The following resources contain helpful consumer information
(from Michigan Health and Safety Coalition consumer reports):

The Massachusetts Coalition for the Prevention of Medical Errors has developed a consumer guide that encourages patients to become "part of the health care team" along with their physicians, nurses, and pharmacists, to prevent medication mistakes. The guide was developed in conjunction with the Washington, D.C.-based Institute for Family-Centered Care and is based on input solicited from patients, families, and health care professionals. The brochure is also available in Spanish.
