On May 31, in a surprise action, our state legislature slipped in a provision to the Illinois SB157, whose purpose was to establish a mandatory hospital reporting system for major adverse events. This provision, called the Illinois Adverse Health Care Events Reporting Law of 2005, establishes an "adverse health care event reporting system designed to facilitate quality improvement in the health care system through communication and collaboration between the Department and health care facilities." The origins of this provision were a similar law already in force in Minnesota . Illinois State Representative Mary Flowers is responsible for introducing much of the language of this bill, and the Chicago Patient Safety Forum applaud her efforts and those of other state legislatures for taking on this issue.
