The IOMC/CPSF/Otho S. A. Sprague Recognition Award in Patient Safety.

Presented to an individual, or group of individuals, or organization from the Metropolitan Chicago area that has made a significant contribution to improve patient safety. Such contributions can be in leadership, advocacy, research, systems improvements, or related venues.

Gordon Schiff, MD received this award at the IOMC's annual meeting on May 17, 2005. Dr. Schiff is a founding initiating member of the Chicago Patient Safety Forum and serves on its steering committee. "Through direct patient care, research, mentoring, hospital administration, professional and civic service, and advocacy, Dr. Schiff has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to patient safety, clinical excellence, access and equality for all patients" reads the nomination.

Gordon Schiff, MD is a senior attending physician and Director of Clinical Quality Research in the Department of Medicine at Chicago 's Cook County Hospital , where he has practiced and taught internal medicine for more than twenty-five years. He also served as medical director of the city's largest outpatient general medical clinic from 1987-1996. Dr. Schiff has chaired Cook County Hospital 's Assurance/Improvement Committee, currently chairs its Drug Utilization Review Committee, and is Associate Chair of its Drug and Formulary (P&T) Committees. He is Principal Investigator of the three-year, AHRQ-funded Cook County-Rush Developmental Center for Research in Patient Safety (DCERPS) project examining diagnosis errors. Dr. Schiff is the author of numerous articles related to medical informatics, quality improvement, patient safety, and medication usage quality. He serves on the editorial boards of Medical Care and the Journal of Public Health Policy . He is a member of the United States Pharmacopeial (USP) Convention Expert Committee of Revision, and chaired their Consumer Inter­est/Health Education Panel from 1990 to 2000. Dr. Schiff currently serves on USP's Safe Medication Use Expert Committee and chairs its standardized pill imprint code task force. He is a member of the expert advisory committee for the Leapfrog Group's computerized provider order entry (CPOE) standards and is a member of the Center for Information Technology Leadership (Partners Health Care, MA) ambulatory CPOE Advisory Board.
