Gordon Schiff, MD is Professor of Medicine at Rush Medical College and a senior attending physician and Director of Clinical Quality Research and Improvement in the Department of Medicine at Chicago's Cook County (Stroger) Hospital, where he has practiced and taught internal medicine for the past thirty years. He served as medical director of the city's largest outpatient general medical clinic from 1987-1996. Dr. Schiff has chaired Cook County Hospital's Assurance/Improvement Committee, currently chairs its Drug Utilization Review Committee, and is Chair of its Drug and Formulary (P&T) Committee. He wasPrincipal Investigator of the four -year, AHRQ-funded Cook County-Rush Developmental Center for Research in Patient Safety (DCERPS) project examining diagnosis errors. Dr. Schiff is the author of numerous articles related to medical informatics, quality improvement, patient safety, and medication usage quality. He serves on the editorial boards of Medical Care and the Journal of Public Health Policy . He is editor of recent book published by the Joint Commission Resources entitled "Getting Results: Reliably Communicating and Acting on Critical Test Results" (2006). He served on the United States Pharmacopeial (USP) Convention Expert Committee of Revision, and chaired their Consumer Interest/Health Education Panel from 1990 to 2000 and USP's Safe Medication Use Expert Committee (2000-2005). He is a member of the expert advisory committee for the Leapfrog Group's computerized provider order entry (CPOE) . He is currently co-PI of CSPF's Medication Safety Medication Reconciliation project (funded by Michael Reese Health Trust), and PI for the Attorney General Consumer and Prescriber Educational Grant focusing on leveraging formularies for safer, more effective use of medications.
