| Carlotta M. Rinke, MD, FACP, MBA, is Medical Director of Quality and Patient Safety at Alexian Brothers Medical Center and, as such, is at the center of patient safety initiatives that span across the Alexian Brothers Hospital Network. Her work began in 2002 with involvement in the Institute for Healthcare Improvement collaborative in patient safety, where the team worked closely with faculty in developing a number of projects, and presented their work in Feb. 2003 and Feb. 2004. Currently, Dr. Rinke works with physicians and multidisciplinary teams that include medical, nursing and pharmacy staff. She is heavily involved with implementing evidence-based medicine in collaboration with physician champions; the work ranges from core measures to prevention of contrast-induced nephropathy to ICU insulin protocols. She is particularly involved in developing collaborative projects in such areas as anticoagulation, medication, critical care and perioperative safety, and leads root cause analyses teams. She also chairs the Subcommittee for Medical Staff Quality and Patient Safety Committees. Dr. Rinke has presented a deep vein thrombosis study at the December 2004 IHI collaborative, and the rapid response team data at the Chicago Patient Safety Forum. She is a faculty member at the IHA medication reconciliation collaborative, and board member of the Illinois Foundation for Quality Health Care. Her training and background include internal medicine and geriatrics. Dr. Rinke also earned her MBA from Kellogg's full-time graduate school in 2000, and earlier in her career she worked as a Contributing Editor to JAMA. |
